- Boehner: ‘Stupid’ to say Amtrak funding cuts caused crash I don't think it's a stupid question, and I'm not sure the answer is as clear-cut as Boehner suggests, but I do believe this: slashing their funding is bound to lead to more such accidents, as they are trying desperately to put measures in place to prevent them but need money to do so. Related: The Plot Against Trains "What we have, uniquely in America, is a political class, and an entire political party, devoted to the idea that any money spent on public goods is money misplaced, not because the state goods might not be good but because they would distract us from the larger principle that no ultimate good can be found in the state. Ride a fast train to Washington today and you’ll start thinking about national health insurance tomorrow."
- 5 Big Banks Expected to Plead Guilty to Felony Charges, but Punishments May Be Tempered "For most people, pleading guilty to a felony means they will very likely land in prison, lose their job and forfeit their right to vote. But when five of the world’s biggest banks plead guilty to an array of antitrust and fraud charges as soon as next week, life will go on, probably without much of a hiccup." That doesn't seem right...
- As women take majority on Austin City Council, staff warned to expect more questions, longer talks Uh...what? "The newly-elected 10-member City Council, plus the mayor, is the first majority female City Council in Austin’s history, with seven women and four men. But apparently this represented such a huge change in governance that the city manager’s office thought the city staff who regularly interact with the City Council needed extra training – in the form of a two-hour training session in March with two speakers from Florida – on how to talk to a female-dominated City Council after decades of rule by men." It doesn't take two hours to learn how to talk to a female-dominated City Council. Look, I can do it in one sentence: Talk to them like they're human beings. There - done. And that's way better advice than their speaker gave, which included "Women ask lots of questions," "Women don’t want to deal with numbers," and "Women are taking over, Hillary Clinton will only encourage this." Just...craziness, man. Craziness.
