- Twitter is under no obligation to host Chuck Johnson’s witch hunts Twitter banning Johnson does not, legally, infringe upon his First Amendment Right to free speech, since Twitter is not Congress (yet). (Just joking - I don't think Twitter will ever run for office.) Is it censorship? Sure, why not. Is it wrong? Maybe. It's a slippery slope, anyway. I do believe anyone should be free to say whatever they want to say, even if it's crazybeans; I am not convinced that companies that provide platforms for communication, like Twitter, are therefore beholden to allow crazybean speech, unless they specifically state that they will host any and all speech. That said, Twitter, Facebook, and other public communication platforms have become invaluable sites for fringe-party communication, an absolutely vital piece of true democratic action. Truly, it shouldn't be the company's responsibility to determine what is or isn't "good speech" - it should be the reader's duty to vet that information before acting on it. We should be better consumers of communicated information - and not rely on Twitter to babysit us. But it's tricky, considering most people are not going to become responsible information consumers overnight, and people's lives are actually made vulnerable due to the spewings of Johnson and the like. We need to approach the whole mess carefully. Related: Free Speech, Censorship, Moderation And Community: The Copia Discussion and Manila Principles
